THET at the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Association UK Annual General Meeting

THET was pleased to be represented by Moses Mulimira, our Diaspora Engagement Advisor, and Hannah Lewis, our Diaspora Engagement Programme Manager, at the recent Uganda Nurses and Midwives Association UK conference.
The event was an excellent opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Ugandan nurses and midwives to the UK health sector and to global health. With over 300 guests in attendance, including the Lord Lieutenant of Northampton, Mr James Saunders, the Deputy Ambassador of the Republic of Uganda to the United Kingdom, Mr John Mugerwa, Ministry of Health Uganda Nursing Commissioner, Ms Agnes Baku, and the Chief Executive Officer of Northampton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Ms Angela Hillary.
Mrs Justine Odwong, President of the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Association UK and senior NHS mental health nurse recognised the role of THET in her address to the conference, praising our allyship with diaspora health workers through programmes that support and amplify the powerful voices of those who often get overlooked.
Celebrating the contributions of diaspora healthcare workers is central to THET’s Experts in Our Midst programme, as we work to dismantle the under-valuing and under-recognition of diaspora expertise in the UK health system. We were delighted to have the opportunity at the event to speak about our Experts in Our Midst programme, which aims to amplify and recognise the voices of the 1 in 5 NHS staff who report a non-British nationality. We also took the opportunity to share our Health Equity for ALL (HEAL) campaign with conference attendees, which seeks to increase UK Government contributions to global health spending. Central to both these initiatives are the voices and experiences of health workers in the UK and in low- and middle-income countries.
We were honoured that the association chose to award THET’s Diaspora Engagement Advisor, Moses Mulimira, with a special award for his work in diaspora health advocacy and mobilisation. Our CEO, Ben Simms, was also recognised with an award at the event recognising his work as an “Outstanding Friend of Uganda Advocate”.
Following the event, Moses said: “It is an honour to be recognised by the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Association with an award for my work to advocate for the undervalued expertise of diaspora healthcare professionals. I am delighted to be working with THET as Diaspora Engagement Advisor, working across the organisation and specifically on the Experts in Our Midst programme, to continue THET’s longstanding work to make sure diaspora healthcare staff get the recognition they deserve.”
